🌲 What Is Tents and Trees?

Tents and Trees—sometimes called Trees and Tents—is a logic puzzle played on a square grid containing trees.

Somewhere beside every tree is a tent, but it’s up to you to determine exactly where each tent should go.

The numbers along the outside of the puzzle tell you how many tents belong in each row and column. By combining those numbers with the positions of the trees, you can gradually eliminate impossible spaces until every tent has found its proper campsite.

If you enjoy Sudoku, Slitherlink, Nonograms, Minesweeper, or other deduction puzzles, Tents and Trees may become a new favorite.

⛺ How to Play Tents and Trees

The goal is to place the correct number of tents on the grid while following a few simple rules:

  1. Every tree needs exactly one tent. Each tree must be paired with one tent.
  2. Tents must be directly beside a tree. A tent can be placed immediately above, below, left, or right of its tree—not diagonally.
  3. Every tent belongs to a tree. You can’t place a tent somewhere simply because it satisfies the row or column number. It must also be able to pair with a tree.
  4. Tents cannot touch each other. Two tents may not be next to one another horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
  5. Follow the numbers around the grid. The number beside a row tells you exactly how many tents belong in that row. The number above or below a column tells you exactly how many tents belong in that column.

Once every tree has a tent, no tents touch, and all the row and column totals are correct, you’ve solved the puzzle! 🎉

🧠 A Simple Tents and Trees Strategy

Not sure where to begin?

Start with the easiest clues.

If a row says 0, you immediately know that none of its empty squares can contain a tent. Mark those spaces as grass or eliminate them.

Next, look for trees that have only one possible empty square beside them. If every other neighboring square has been eliminated, you’ve found where that tree’s tent must go.

Whenever you place a tent, remember that all eight squares surrounding it cannot contain another tent.

Then check your row and column totals again. Each new tent can give you another clue, creating a chain of deductions across the puzzle.

The key is not to guess. Work through what you know and let each deduction lead you to the next.
